Champs Sports had one goal for the holiday season: give teens an exciting way to ask family and friends for specific gifts from their stores. To do that, we designed and developed a microsite that allowed fans to create personalized banner ads and videos that masqueraded as viral hits to sneakily get their holiday wish lists in front of unsuspecting gift givers.
The “Viral Video Hacks” portion of the experience allowed users to customize one of four viral video templates. Users could automatically, seamlessly animate their Facebook photo, personalized text, and desired Champs gifts into the video. When the video was done, the site gave users a custom link to pass around, leading to a video player on a mock viral content website. During the video, the ruse is revealed and the mock website transformed into a Champs branded page. The user's wishlist became available for download, along with the option to make a new video.
The second option, a "Banner Ad Takeover," gave users a way to replace every banner ad on every website with a banner featuring themselves and their holiday wish list. After following the same process as for the personalized viral video, users would be prompted to download a browser extension and secretly install it onto the recipient's computer.
